We have primarily ten clear and ambitious objectives, namely:
Our first objective is to ensure that every farmer can not only make a decent living from avocado cultivation but also thrive. To achieve this, we will implement continuous training programs to improve agricultural practices, introduce modern technologies, and promote access to quality inputs. We will also negotiate partnerships with international buyers to secure outlets at competitive prices while ensuring an equitable distribution of profits within the value chain.
To conquer international markets, it is essential that our avocados meet the highest quality standards. We will work with experts in agronomy and international trade to develop quality certifications, recognized labels, and packaging that meets the requirements of different markets. These efforts will increase the added value of our products and open new commercial opportunities for our farmers.
The informal avocado trade, often undervalued, represents a loss not only for producers but also for the state. By structuring this market, we ensure that every transaction contributes to tax revenues, essential for financing infrastructure and public services. This will also create a more transparent and fair commercial environment, strengthening trust between producers and buyers.
Beyond the income generated, our initiative aims to improve the quality of life for farming families. With higher earnings, farmers will be able to invest in their children's education, access quality healthcare, and improve their living conditions. We will also promote the inclusion of women and young people in this sector by offering them specific training and facilitating their access to financing.
Sustainability is at the heart of our vision for the future of the avocado sector in Burundi. We firmly believe that avocado cultivation should become a sustainable source of prosperity for future generations. To achieve this, we focus on the following environmentally and community-friendly agricultural practices:
1.Use of Organic Fertilizers: We encourage the use of natural compost and organic fertilizers to enrich soils without degrading them, while avoiding the excessive use of harmful chemicals.
2. Sustainable Water Resource Management: Rational irrigation and the use of modern water conservation techniques will be promoted to ensure optimal use of this precious resource, avoiding waste and preserving water reserves for the future.
3.Integrated Pest Management: We favor pest control methods that minimize the use of chemical pesticides, promoting natural solutions and integrated approaches to protect crops while preserving the local ecosystem.
4.Crop Diversification: To maintain soil fertility and reduce economic risks associated with monoculture, we encourage producers to integrate other crops compatible with avocado trees, ensuring greater resilience against market fluctuations.
5.Introduction of Agri-Tech: From an innovation perspective, we plan to introduce Agri-Tech nationwide within the next ten years. This initiative aims to integrate technology into agriculture, maximizing production, improving crop quality, and positioning Burundi as a global leader in avocado production.
6.Development of the Avocado Management Manual (ONEGA): Aware of the importance of standardization and compliance with international standards, we have already designed a procedure manual titled ONEGA (National Avocado Management Organization). This document, which is awaiting approval by the state's authorized institutions, will serve as a roadmap for all actors in the avocado sector in Burundi. It will detail optimal practices for avocado production management, ensuring that our products meet the most demanding market requirements.
By boosting the avocado sector, we aim to transform the local economy. The development of collection centers, such as the one in Kinazi, will stimulate economic activity in rural areas, create jobs, and encourage the establishment of small and medium-sized enterprises related to avocado processing and distribution. We also hope that this initiative will serve as a model for other agricultural sectors in Burundi.
Women and youth play a crucial role in our society. We want them to be key players in this economic transformation. Therefore, we will set up specific programs to support them, offering them tailored training and facilitating their access to credit. Their involvement will enhance the resilience and sustainability of this sector.
Avocado production must also contribute to the country's food security. A portion of our production will be destined for local consumption, ensuring that our populations can benefit from the nutritional richness of avocados. Additionally, by diversifying income sources, farmers will be less vulnerable to fluctuations in international markets and climatic hazards.
Our ambition extends beyond Burundi's borders. We actively seek to attract investors and international partners who share our vision. These collaborations will not only bring in capital but also transfer advanced technologies and essential know-how to strengthen our avocado sector.
Our commitment is to make markets more accessible. In addition to the physical market in Kinazi-Muyinga, we will set up a virtual market, accessible via our website and social media platforms. This virtual market will allow buyers from around the world to connect with our producers, facilitating commercial transactions and making Burundian avocado trade more transparent and dynamic.
As experts in international trade and new technologies (ICT), we benefit from strong relationships with numerous multinationals. This allows us to guarantee avocado producers that they will not lack commercial outlets, while ensuring competitive prices. With our technological expertise, we ensure that transactions are secure, efficient, and accessible, thus strengthening our position in local and international markets.
